Mira is one of three children of well-known character actor, Paul Sorvino. Although an entertainer himself, Paul discouraged his children from pursuing acting, fearing what might happen to them later in life if they experienced stardom too young.
      Mira followed this sound advice and decided to immerse herself in academics, and upon completing high school from Dwight Englewood High, she went on to Harvard where she graduated with a Major in East Asian Languages and Civilizations. These studies took her to Beijing where she lived for eight months, not only mastering the Mandarin language, but ended up writing a Hoopes Prize-winning thesis on racial conflict in China.
      Done with her studies, Mira decided she was ready to try her hand at acting, and made the move New York where she supported herself between auditions by tending bar, teaching Chinese, and working as a coat-check girl and waitressing.
      Interestingly, Mira got in front of the camera by starting behind it. She worked for a year at Robert De Niro's Tribeca Productions as a reader, then moved on to the position of associate producer of a documentary about neo-Nazis in Russia. In 1992 she was given the responsibility of third director on the film "Amongst Friends", and within days she was promoted to casting director, then to associate producer and eventually she was cast as one of the leads. This lead to a succession of low-profile roles, including a small part in "Quiz Show". It was this role that caught the eye of Woody Allen who went on to cast her in "Mighty Aphropdite", providing her with an Oscar winning role.
      Since winning her Oscar, Mira has kept busy with work in film, television and stage, and although some of her choice of roles have not been the best, Mira continues to hold the attention and respect of both critics and fans alike.
