ANNETTE BENING
May 29, 1958
Topeka, Kansas
The youngest of four children, Annette Bening grew up in a close-knit family. Her family moved
to San Diego when Annette was 7. She appeared in such Patrick Henry High School plays as
Godspell, and later became a drama student at San Diego Mesa College. From there she went on to enroll at San Francisco State Univeristy, and upon completing her acting degree, attended San Francisco's elite American Conservatory Theater, joining the school's acting company 1980.
It was while she was at ACT that Annette met fellow thespian J. Steven White, whom she later
married in 1984. For a while they lived in Colorado where Steven ran the Denver Center
Theatre while Annette starred in its productions of Pygmalion and The Cherry Orchard.
Finding herself growing apart from her husband, Annette moved on her own to New York.
Within months she landed the lead as a flaky photographer in the Off-Broadway drama Coastal
Disturbances, earning herself a Tony nomination when the play moved to Broadway.
After a few career disappointments, including a failed TV pilot, Annette's career took a turn
when she got the role of a ruthless hustler in The Grifters. The following year she met
Warren Beatty and managed to steal the heart of one of Hollywood's most sought-after bachelors.
They wed and now have four children, Kathlyn, Benjamin, Isabel and Ella.
