HARVEY KEITEL
May 13, 1939
Brooklyn, New York
Harvey Keitel spent most of his youth on the streets of New York, and at the age of sixteen
decided to join the Marine Corps, a decision which took him to Lebanon. After his return
to the States, he floundered for a while in mediocre jobs until finally he thought he'd try
his hand at acting.
Harvey studied under both Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg, eventually landing roles in some
off-Broadway productions. Sometime during this time Harvey met Martin Scorsese, a struggling
filmmaker himself, and ended up getting a part in Martin's student production. Since then,
Harvey has worked with Scorsese on numerous projects.
Throughout the 80s Harvey continued to find plenty of work, but it was usually in the
stereotypical role of a thug. But in 1993 he was finally able to break away from such roles,
and to prove his versatility as an actor by co-starring in Jane Campion’s "The Piano".
