ANTHONY HOPKINS
December 31, 1937
Port Talbot, Wales, UK
The only son of a baker, Anthony Hopkins was drawn to the theatre while attending the
YMCA at age 17. He went on to hone his craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. And
beginning in 1960, Anthony spent four years in regional repertory before his first London
success in "Julius Caesar".
Often called the successor to fellow Welsh actor Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins was a celebrated
stage actor before making an auspicious film debut in "The Lion in Winter", as the
scheming Richard the Lionheart. Anthony Hopkins has also played volatile, obsessed characters, as
well as quietly repressed, mild-mannered types such as Bruno Hauptmann, the accused
kidnapper of the Lindbergh baby. But he made an indelible impression, and broadened his
audience considerably, as Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs", for which he won
an Oscar in the Best Actor category.
