RUTGER HAUER
January 23, 1944
Breukelen, Netherlands
In spite of the fact that both Rutger Hauer's parents were drama teachers, Rutger believed his
destiny lay in the sea, and at fifteen he ran away from home in order to become a sailor.
But about a year later, his true calling surfaced and he left sailing to enroll in acting
classes.
In 1973 Rutger Hauer burst onto the European film scene in Paul Verhoeven's "Turkish Delight." A
story based on a controversial novel by Dutch novelist Jan Wolkers. A string of films followed,
but it was his American debut starring opposite Sylvester Stallone in 1981's "Nighthawks"
that brought him to the attention of American audiences. His most famous role was that of
the brutal yet tragic android in the 1982 classic Sci-Fi drama "BladeRunner", directed by
Ridley Scott.
