CUBA GOODING JR.
January 2, 1968
The Bronx, New York
Cuba Gooding Jr., along with his brother and sister, were born to Cuba Gooding, lead vocalist for rhythm and blues group The Main Ingredient, and mother, Shirley, also a singer [They separated in 1974]. After attending four different high schools in Southern California, and studying traditional Japanese martial arts for three years, Cuba turned his attention to acting.
Cuba made his film debut as the star of writer/director John Singleton's searing coming-of-age
drama Boyz N The Hood in 1991, and a year later was featured in A Few Good Men alongside his fellow Jerry Maguire co-star, Tom Cruise.
Chosen by People magazine as one of the "50 most beautiful people in the world" in 1997,
the five-foot-ten Gooding segued directly from Jerry Maguire into another James L. Brooks production, As Good As It Gets, co-starring with Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt.
He met future wife Sara Kapfer in high school, and lived with her for seven years before
marrying in March 1994. They have two children, Spencer, born 1993, and Mason, born 1996.
