Although born in New York, most people believe Mel Gibson to be an Aussie. This is probably due to
the fact that at the age of twelve Mel's family moved to Australia. Growing up Down Under,
Mel Gibson attended the National Institute of Dramatic Arts at the University of New South Wales. Upon
graduation he went on to perform in various plays.
It didn't take long for Mel Gibson's talent to grab people's attention, and in 1979 director
George Miller cast him in the lead role in Mad Max, a film which brought him worldwide
recognition.
He made his American film debut in The River, starring opposite Sissy Spacek, but Mel's
career skyrocketed when he starred in Lethal Weapon. Like the Mad Max series,
Lethal Weapon went on to produce three sequels, and made him the most sought after
leading man in Hollywood.
Mel runs his own production company, Icon Productions, which has seen its own success with such
films as Braveheart, Hamlet, and Forever Young.
