Raised in an artistic family, Richard Gere attended the University of Massachusetts on a gymnastic
scholarship upon graduation from high school in 1967, but dropped out after two years of
philosophy and drama studies in order to launch his acting career.
For the next few years Richard Gere performed in repertory theatre, before opting to strike out as a professional trumpet player, and found himself settling in at a commune of rock musicians in rural Vermont. But that life was not for him and he soon moved on.
Richard Gere moved for a time to London to try his hand at British theatre. And there he stepped into the role of Danny Zuko in the stage favorite Grease. On his return to the States Gere took over the role in the Broadway-mounted musical.
Report to the Commissioner in 1975 was Richard Gere's transition from stage to screen, and his role caught enough attention that he was soon cast as a shell-shocked, psychopathic soldier in the 1976 drama Baby Blue Marine. A string of films followed, but Richard Gere scored his first box office success with a lead role in the 1982 military-romance An Officer and a Gentleman.
In 1990 Richard Gere shot to super stardom when he starred opposite Julie Roberts in the mega hit Pretty Woman.
On February 6, 2000, Richard and actress Carey Lowell welcomed their first child together, son, Homer James Jigme.
